Introduction

My name is Georgia B Page and I am a junior at Roosevelt High School as well as Central Academy. I have thirteen pets and two younger siblings and live in the Des Moines area. I am a co-facilitator for the Roosevelt branch of the Community of Racial Equity (C.O.R.E.) which works to educate students on racial issues and solutions and how they can be advocates for their own long term success. My favorite book is Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, which is a true story of a lawyer working at a non-profit to free those who have been wrongly convicted of crimes and placed on death row.
I decided to add the classes Writing for Social Justice and Incarceration's Writings (each four weeks) so supplement an overarching research topic of Social Justice. I selected these classes because I not only wanted to learn about social justice in one of it's most common formats, our prison systems but also how to effectively write about it. In my opinion, the thoughts and analysis that I do in regards to these impacts and long-term effects do not matter if I am not able to convey them properly. I am hoping both of these classes will help me to carry out the work that I do on a daily basis in a more impactful manner and achieve my own goals as a social activist.
For the classes that I selected, I am hoping to gain an overall deeper understanding as to how impactful writing can be in regards to social justice work carried out throughout different communities, and hopefully gain those skills into my own life. In my life, I am hoping to eventually go to law school and then work in a nonprofit doing work similar to that of Bryan Stevenson. These two classes are crucial to ensuring that this is a field that I want to pursue, as well as further preparing me for the said field. I believe that attaining these foundational skills will allow me to flourish in the spaces that I put myself in, and will help me to become as successful as possible.
